Wiki Part 3, Return of the Wiki

Postby MsTrinity » August 31st, 2008, 3:01 am

Hi folks.

You may or may not know me, but I primarily lurk about reading stories and playing on Dawn of BE as Alexandria Trinity.

A few weeks ago, I raised a few concerns about documentation concerning the MUSH, as well as the state of the Wiki. The response I got was both helpful and fair; but really underlined a need to have a bit more involved management in the wiki area. Having just come out of college for systems administration and using wiki products in my final project; I've volunteered my time to MrHHH in order to help him (and all the users of the Overflowing community) get a new wiki up and running.

The game plan, for the moment, looks like this:

After talking with Mr. HHH and giving my recommendations, we intend to use the MediaWiki distribution to serve as the architecture for the new wiki project. In order to use the latest and most secure version, this will require that the server hosting the website will need to be upgraded to the latest versions of SQL and PHP. Despite the pitfalls possible in upgrading, it's one of those issues of better security and reliability so "it should be done anyway". Mr. HHH has relayed to me that as soon as he has the time to make sure the update won't make any existing systems explode; the server will be updated and happy for the fresh MediaWiki install.

In the meantime, there is a clear message from Mr. HHH that I am allowed to migrate the existing Tome of BE Knowledge wiki over to this new system; and an expressed interest from Hivemind that someone take over the Dawnof.be wiki. The game plan then is to merge the two wikis together in a single system that will be hosted on the overflowingbra.com site. It will be my task then to dredge all the information I can from both existing wikis and compile it into a functional new site. In keeping with the theme, this new wiki will be called "The OverflowingWiki"

Because server updating and troubleshooting is not happening immediately, I have currently set up a OverflowingWiki testbed on my home network; where I will begin compiling the content from the two existing wikis. That way, as MrHHH gets the real server ready; I'll have most of the content already organized for when the MediaWiki install goes live on the real server.

Most of this post is just informing everyone that the Wiki is being revised; and once it goes live everyone is encouraged to make up new accounts and contribute :) I would, however, like to ask for a little help in the graphics department for the wiki's logo. While it's easy enough for me to resize and apply text to someone's source material, I have very little artistic talents myself.

What I'm looking for is something that would work well in 135px × 135px format; which is to say a relatively small square (look at wikipedia or encyclopedia dramatica's logos for an example, they have the same MediaWiki underpinnings and layout format). Going with the name 'OverflowingWiki', something suggestive with a bosomy overfilled top would be optimal; but anything fitting in with the theme that isn't explicit (be mindful of the overflowingbra.com's title page graphic; which hides nudity past a jump) would be great.

I'll post updates on the Wiki project here as they unfold. :)

Good timing...
I'm in the midst of decomissioning my internet connection, and have tarred up the wiki.
It rab on a run of the mill PHP/MySQL install (5/4, respectively) and runs tikiwiki.
I have a tarball with the full frontend and SQL dump. any LAMP guru will be able to make use of it.
just give me and address that accepts attachments in the 10M range and I'll shoot it on over

FYI for those who are paying attention to this. We're still working on it.

It seems that the project is going to be a lot larger than either of us expected. I'm going to move the server to a fresh install. :-/

For the techies amongst you, all this is being run on Fedora 2.
Later,
MrHHH
